Recent activity
- 2026-04-27 controversy Called ongoing July Charter discussion 'unnecessary' in parliament, sparking protests from Jamaat-e-Islami and NCP opposition members; Chief Whip later clarified Roni meant 'unnecessary debate,' not the charter itself; Deputy Speaker committed to reviewing the remark ↗↗
Provenance & notes
Constituency number 195 confirmed independently by BSS and Wikipedia -- no discrepancy from the assigned number. Boundary last redrawn in 2008 (5th seat added to Gazipur district per 2001 census); EC 2023 draft changes were subsequently reverted by court order per December 2025 EC decision, leaving 2008 lines in force. Geographic coverage is Gazipur City Corporation wards 19-39 and 43-57 plus Gazipur Cantonment; this spans the Tongi and Gacha thana areas (RMG-heavy) plus parts of Gazipur Sadar under the GCC -- the constituency does not correspond to upazila units. Roni is the son of late Prof. MA Mannan (BNP Vice Chairman, first GCC mayor 2013-2022, former state minister for religious affairs 1991 cabinet, died April 2022 aged 72); this is Roni's first parliamentary term. EC affidavit (BDNews24 report): own assets Tk 382.9m including Tk 234.9m in cash; wife Taposhi Tanmoy Chowdhury (also a candidate) listed Tk 19.6m; combined Tk 402.5m vs liabilities of Tk 1.4bn in IFIC Bank loans under company names Avalon Aviation Limited and Foster Trading International Limited. Nine criminal cases pending per EC affidavit: 2 NI Act (cheque dishonour), 1 Artha Rin Ain, 6 others not individually itemised in public summary. wealth_disclosed_bdt set to Roni's own assets (382,900,000 BDT) per EC affidavit, excluding wife's separately filed assets. Vote math verified: 188,606/356,084 = 52.97% (rounds to 53.0%); 140,950/356,084 = 39.59% (rounds to 39.6%); margin 47,656/356,084 = 13.38 pp (rounds to 13.4%); top-4 candidates sum to 346,338 leaving 9,746 votes for remaining minor candidates not individually reported. Gazipur-2 has the largest registered electorate of any constituency in Bangladesh (804,333). Runner-up Ali Naser Khan is NCP (National Citizen Party), confirmed by Wikipedia and BSS. Previous MP Zahid Ahsan Russel held seat for AL from 2008 through 2024 dissolution; seat won by BNP from AL.
