Provenance & notes
LGED was established as a department in August 1992, elevated from the Local Government Engineering Bureau (LGEB, est. October 1984), which itself succeeded the Works Program Wing (WPW, est. 1982) and an earlier ministerial Cell created in the 1970s. No specific enabling ordinance or statutory act has been identified as the legal basis; LGED is a non-statutory executive department operating under the Local Government Division. Chief Engineer Javed Karim took charge on 3 November 2025 as the 20th Chief Engineer (Routine Duties), succeeding Md. Anwar Hossain who retired 26 October 2025; verified against TBS News, Financial Express, Bangladesh Post. annual_budget_bdt = 1,821,025,000,000 BDT (Tk 18,210.25 crore), reflecting LGED's share of the LGD Grant 34 allocation for FY2025-26 as reported by Daily Sun; the full LGD demand (no. 137) totals Tk 36,101 crore; cross-verified against MoF portal PDF. staff_count is null: total sanctioned post count for LGED is not published as a single primary-source figure; the organogram shows a multi-tier structure (CE, ACE, SE, XEN, AE, SAE levels) across 64 districts and 495 upazila offices but no single verified aggregate total is available publicly. Shamibag-Kutubpur directive date: primary sources (BSS article 386834, tob.news) consistently report the meeting as 13 May 2026; the user prompt referenced 'May 8'---this agent uses the verified primary-source date of 13 May 2026. Kashadaha canal: BSS district article 364414 places inauguration on 27 February 2026 in Sibalaya upazila, Manikganj. Canal re-excavation target of 318.639 km is the government's stated figure for the current programme phase per Dhaka Tribune/BSS; the broader national 20,000 km target over five years is coordinated across BWDB and LGED. CRIM-CReLIC: GCF project FP004 approved March 2018, extended to June 2026; KfW review mission 22-27 November 2025 confirmed by TBS News and BSS. Rural road network figure (372,754 km) sourced from Prothom Alo English citing LGED's own data. All material facts cross-verified against 2+ independent primary sources.
