Provenance & notes

BSEC was formed on 1 July 1976 by merging two predecessor corporations -- Bangladesh Steel Mills Corporation and Bangladesh Engineering and Shipbuilding Corporation -- under Ordinance No. XXV of 1976 (2nd Amendment to the Bangladesh Industrial Enterprises Nationalisation Order 1972). It initially managed 62 enterprises; by 2025 only 8 remain operational. Three enterprises -- Atlas Bangladesh Ltd, National Tubes Ltd, and Eastern Cables Ltd -- have had 49% shares offloaded to the public and employees. Dockyard and Engineering Works Ltd (Narayanganj, est. 1922) and Chittagong Dry Dock Ltd were transferred to Bangladesh Navy on 7 December 2006 and are no longer under BSEC. Khulna Shipyard Ltd (KSY) is a separate government enterprise under the Ministry of Defence managed by Bangladesh Navy since 1999; it is frequently misattributed to BSEC in secondary sources. Bangladesh Blade Factory Ltd (BBFL) was established by BSEC in 1984. Current chairman Nuzhat Yasmin (appointed 11 March 2025, Ministry of Public Administration notification) replaced Md Anwarul Alam who held the position as additional secretary on deputation. Staff count and current consolidated budget are not published in verified accessible form; FY2019-20 aggregated figures are the most recent available from official government portals. The BSEC e-Shop (bseceshop.gov.bd) sells products of BSEC enterprises online, integrated with Sonali Payment Gateway per a December 2024 agreement.
