University Watch
public · engineering · Khulna
The university is currently focused on stabilizing its academic environment and strengthening its long-term development and industry-academia partnerships.
KUET inaugurated the three-day national mechanical festival Ignition-2026 to foster innovation and industry-academia collaboration.
The university announced a consultation meeting for alumni of KUET and its predecessor institutions to be held on July 24, 2026.
KUET traces its lineage to Khulna Engineering College (1967), renamed Bangladesh Institute of Technology (BIT) Khulna in 1986, and elevated to a full university under the KUET Act 2003. Campus: 117.48 acres at Fulbarigate, ~15 km from Khulna city centre. Student body per Wikipedia: 7,941 total (5,916 UG, 1,809 PG, 153 PhD, 63 other); 463 academic staff. Leadership history 2024-26 was highly unstable: Mashud first appointed September 5, 2024; removed April 24, 2025 following February 18, 2025 student-Chhatra Dal clashes that injured ~100 students; interim VC Prof. Md. Hazrat Ali served May 1-22, 2025 before resigning amid teachers' protest; Prof. Md. Maksud Helali (retired BUET) served July 24, 2025-March 16, 2026; Mashud reappointed March 16, 2026, assumed office March 24, 2026. Pro-VC Prof. Dr. SK Shariful Alam was also relieved in April 2025 alongside Mashud; no replacement named as of May 2026. The Selim Hyder referenced in the task brief is Prof. Md. Selim Hossain (EEE department), who died in December 2021 after alleged BCL harassment -- not a 2025 event; nine students were expelled. The 2025 crisis was a separate incident (Chhatra Dal vs. anti-discrimination student movement). Budget data unavailable from public sources.
