Provenance & notes

Slug preserved as 'bangabandhu-sheikh-mujibur-rahman-agricultural-university' per project instruction. ORIGINAL NAME: Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University (বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিবুর রহমান কৃষি বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়); acronym BSMRAU. CURRENT NAME: Gazipur Agricultural University (গাজীপুর কৃষি বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়); acronym GAU. RENAMING: Ordinance No. 05 of 2025, gazetted 13 February 2025 by the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs under Article 93(1) of the Constitution (Parliament dissolved under interim government). One of 13-14 universities renamed by removing Sheikh family honorifics; official rationale cited by gazette was naming confusion among similarly named institutions. ESTABLISHMENT: Created by Presidential Order No. 16 of 1998 on 22 November 1998, by redesignating the Institute of Postgraduate Studies in Agriculture (IPSA), which had itself been founded in 1991 as an autonomous institution under Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), Mymensingh. The university is the 13th fully-funded public university of Bangladesh. LOCATION: Salna, Gazipur (Joydebpur area); 76-hectare campus including 16 hectares farmland. VC: Prof. Dr. GKM Mustafizur Rahman appointed 27 October 2024 (verified via Wikipedia and official VC page gau.edu.bd/vc/); not reshuffled in March 16 2026 (7-university batch) or May 14 2026 (11-university batch: BUET, DUET, Islamic University, Barishal, Noakhali, Comilla, Rangamati, Nazrul Islam, Jamalpur, Pabna, Mawlana Bhashani) BNP-Tarique government reshuffle rounds. Pro-VC: Prof. Dr. M. Moynul Haque, appointed 17 October 2024 from within (Department of Agronomy, GAU); teachers protested a rumoured external appointment on 12 May 2026 -- this likely refers to a possible second Pro-VC post or a future replacement. Treasurer: Prof. Dr. Md. Safiul Islam Afrad; Registrar: Md. Abdullah Mridha (acting charge). STUDENT COUNT: Wikipedia gives ~1,700 total (~1,320 UG, ~350 PG, ~50 PhD); Banglapedia (older data) listed 49 full-time teachers which is now superseded by 214 academic staff per Wikipedia and gau.edu.bd. BUDGET: not found in public primary sources; set null. FACULTIES (7): Agriculture, Fisheries, Agricultural Economics and Rural Development, Veterinary Medicine, Graduate Studies, others. INSTITUTES (3): IBGE (Institute of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering), ICCE (Institute of Climate Change and Environment), IFSP (Institute of Food Security and Policy -- tentative). JOURNAL: Publishes 'Annals of Bangladesh Agriculture' (biannual, since 1991, continuing from IPSA era). PARENT MINISTRY: Ministry of Education (confirmed by UGC listing and ordinance gazette). UGC profile: ugc-universities.gov.bd/university-detail/18.
