Problems and issues
- urbanization As the district seat, the town has absorbed much of Noakhali's rapid built-up expansion onto low-lying, poorly drained land around the administrative core. So what: Unserviced growth on flood-prone ground concentrates people and assets where drainage and surge protection are weakest. Source: Local Government Engineering Department (LGED)
- climate disaster Heavy monsoon rainfall combines with poor estuarine drainage and tidal backflow to cause prolonged waterlogging in and around the town. So what: Stagnant floodwater disrupts the district's main service hub and damages property and roads. Source: Bangladesh Water Development Board
- water Shallow groundwater and surface water in the coastal belt around the sadar are vulnerable to saline intrusion. So what: Drinking and irrigation water grows scarcer even at the district's most populated point. Source: Department of Public Health Engineering (DPHE)
Probable solutions
- Floodplain-aware land-use zoning with drainage and water-supply networks prioritized ahead of further built-up expansion in the town core. Responsible: Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) · policy proposal
- Salinity-resilient water supply through rainwater harvesting and pond-sand-filter systems in the saline coastal belt. Responsible: Department of Public Health Engineering (DPHE) · policy proposal
